The Last Shadow Puppets – ‘The Age Of Understatement’

The Last Shadow Puppets – ‘The Age Of Understatement’

Ludicrous stuff from Arctic Alex Turner and his buddy Miles Kane from The Rascals – ah, you’ve heard of Arctic Monkeys anyway. Turner clearly feels his wings are clipped by his hard-edged, kitchen sink day job, so has hooked up with Kane to take a flight of fancy or two. This has the air of The Coral having a stab at vintage Western theme ‘Rawhide’, all galloping guitars and psychedelic harmonies, and is a rather splendid curio. It’s camp and menacing at the same time, as we’ve just decided all great pop should be.

Against Me! – ‘Stop!’

Against Me! – ‘Stop!’

What fresh circle of hell is this? You’ll have to suspend your disbelief here, but ‘Stop!’ sounds like nothing less terrifying than Nickelback trying to be Franz Ferdinand. Against Me! have been your standard pretend American punks for more than 10 years now, so they should understand their limits, but the portentous album title New Wave suggests there’s a lot more of this about. “Stop! Take some time to think,” goes the leaden chant. “Figure out what’s important to you/Gotta make a serious decision”. Pressing the “Stop!” button would be a start.
